					description
This exclusive work of art takes you on a fairytale journey through the Orient - Kaendler's sculpture of the gentleman rider. At first glance, this curious figure seems to belong to the realm of European oriental fantasies. After all, it is difficult to find evidence that Oriental rulers rode rhinoceroses and elephants. Nevertheless, Meissen's master modeler has worked on this hand-painted sculpture with great attention to detail and created another work of art as a testimony to unrivaled Meissen virtuosity. He designed the robes of the stately figure exclusively after Ferriol's "truest and most recent depictions of the Turkish court", a series of copperplate engravings with portraits from the seraglio. The figure of the rhinoceros is also based on a realistic model: the rhinoceros lady "Clara" could be admired alive and well in Dresden in 1747. In this hand-painted, decorated sculpture, realistic and narrative depictions have merged into an indissoluble unity.
